Welcome to the Irish Wake at Burning Man

Everyone at Burning Man 2011 is invited along to the Irish Wake.

In line with this year’s burning man theme ‘Rites of Passage’, we have decided to bring a traditional Irish Wake to the playa. A Wake is an ancient Irish ceremony held to celebrate the passing of loved ones from this life to the next. During an Irish Wake the departed’s body would be laid out in their home and family and friends would come to remember and celebrate their life. An Irish Wake was more of a party than a funeral, with music, dancing, eating and drinking to ensure the deceased was given a proper send off. We will be doing the same for the Man.

Our Camp

Our flagship feature will be our traditional Irish living room decked out for a Wake with a coffin, a book of condolences, candles, furniture and decorations. Throughout the week guests to our camp can learn about the tradition and pay their last respects to the Man.

Meters away our music tent is where we will be having our parties. Complete with a hefty sound system, disco lights and dj set-up we will host a number of parties during the week. Then on the night of the burn we will have a traditional Irish shindig with live session music, dancing and of course... a load of whiskey.
